Brno Art Open
The project Brno Art Open / Sculptures in the Streets originated in 2008. The first and second editions took place in consecutive years, and since the third edition the event has been held as a biennial, i.e. at two-year intervals. The initial stimulus for the launch of Brno Art Open was the effort to set up an organizational structure in Brno for meetings of artists dealing with interventions in the public space. The main idea followed by the biennial to this day is that the visual arts should serve as a medium of dialogue between the city and its inhabitants.
Each edition is held under a synthesizing theme. Initially, the concepts of individual editions were directly related to the current urban space of Brno and its possibilities, but over time, this approach began to change, and sources of inspiration broadened. In 2013, for instance, the project was subtitled On the Edge of a Story and its main source of inspiration at that time was history, specifically the modern development of the city in the 20th century. In 2017, the biennial addressed general issues reflected in the art world – the main theme of that edition was Poetry and Truth, pointing to the question of artistic truth and the phenomenon of post-truth.
The event has an international dimension, and the final selection of participating artists is made by an artistic committee. Over the years, artists from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Germany, Austria, Ukraine, France and the Netherlands have taken part in Brno Art Open.
