Hranice experimentu - Mušhuššu / kÖök

The summer holiday break is over and in the Vašulka Kitchen Brno we are back with another series of concerts, revisiting the theme of post-processing of instruments, which we have been constantly touching on. This time, our ears will be captivated by the project of two bassists, in which only one of them plays the bass- Mušhuššu, and a Norwegian drone/ambient duo- kÖök. Free entry.

Mušhuššu is a mythical creature, a hybrid of an eagle and a lion, a pet of the Babylonian god Marduk, and also an improvisational duo composed of members of the radical improvisational band Stratocluster, known for its distinctive multimedial and performative interventions. In Mušhuššu, Mrva and Gonçalves delve into the post-processing of the double bass, which they augment or otherwise transform with Ableton effects, expanding the already vast world of sonic possibilities of the acoustic instrument itself. The player's gestures of playing the double bass disappear at times under the volume assault of the sampled loops, only to become part of a dialogical duet, after which they vanish, leaving room for the next speech of the strings and bass frequencies revealing more layers of the Babylonian monster in our electronic age.

Luan Gonçalves - double bass
Mikuláš Mrva - Ableton, post-processing

kÖök is a project of guitarists Jørn Erik Ahlsen and Stian Larsen from Oslo. By using guitars, effects pedals and extended techniques, they explore mainly ambient soundscapes somewhere between post-jazz and free-improv music practices. Being partly inspired by traditional Japanese haikus leads to a music that enables us to slow down and immerse ourselves in the listening situation.
