Raviv Ganchrow: Artist Talk

What are earth’s native electrical circuits and how are human activities imprinted in its circuitries? How do buildings, urban infrastructures and citizens participate in complex ground electric dynamics and what do those interactions sound like? Telluric currents are naturally occurring fluctuations in the earths electrical surface charge introduced by geophysical processes, solar cycles, lightning radiation as well as more localized events such as mineral processes, plant growth, precipitation, tramway infrastructures, electronic communication and national power grids.

The sound installation Building Telluric, at Brno’s Dům umění města, employs the building itself as one end of a dipole electrode, tapping into the live electrical ground fluctuations passing beneath the museum. This talk will discuss some theoretical, historical and technical aspects tying into the making of Building Telluric.

Raviv Ganchrow researches the interdependencies of sound, locale and hearing through installations, writing, and the development of transduction technologies. Raviv’s sound works attend to spatial-material operations of sound, in situated conditions such as environmental infrasound, telluric currents, radio transmissions, ocean acoustics, and anechoic chambers. Recent installations employ in-situ circuits patched directly into locations, activating contextual dynamics. He publishes, workshops, and lectures broadly on auditory contexts and the spatial-material agency of sound and is currently a faculty member at the Institute of Sonology, University of the Arts, The Hague.
