The German artist and film director, born in Norway, Bjørn Melhus, usually performs in person in his humorous videos, often in many roles. In the video Freedom and Independence, alongside the title characters personifying Freedom and Independence (as the key notions of neo-liberal theory), he also created the role of the obscure far-right political thinker, Ayn Rand, who is confronted with the consequences of the mechanisms of ruthlessness and exploitation. In his interpretation, Ayn Rand’s ideology suggests a link between excessive individual freedom, or selfishness, and violence and repression, thus indicating a source of many present-day and historical conflicts.
