The work of the late Ivan Chatrný (1928 - 1983) who died prematurely continues to be an underrated chapter in Czech art, although he exhibited intensively in the 1960s, mainly with the Concretists’ Club of which he was a member together with his brother Dalibor. The starting point of his creative endeavours in the second half of the 1960s was working with grids of basic geometrical shapes, most frequently squares and circles. The grids on flat films were layered, overlapped and transformed into negatives. The result was unexpected structures of geometrical shapes extraordinarily rich in composition and very pleasing aesthetically. In the last years of his life Ivan Chatrný worked with small-size drawings/records which – like his grid structures – he transposed to the silk screen technique taking advantage of the possible overlapping or combinations on a flat surface.
