Poverty Vector

You are warmly invited to the opening of the exhibition Poverty Vector on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at 6pm at the House of the Lords of Kunštát. The event will be inaugurated by Jan Grolich, Governor of the South Moravian Region; Ladislav Janíček, Rector of BUT; Radek Suchánek, Dean of FA BUT; Terezie Petišková, Director of DUMB; and Rostislav Koryčánek, curator of the exhibition.

In parallel with Poverty Vector, the exhibitions Artificial Intimacies and Axontorr: Displaced Water Tank 2 Screens Surround Sound will be opened.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

For three semesters, students from several studios of the FA BUT dealt with themes related to various aspects of poverty, inclusion and how this highly topical social issue could be articulated in the field of architecture. Is it even permissible for architects to view the very complex topic of poverty through their profession?

The exhibition aims to make visible the social dimension of architecture and its connection to the economic and political factors that influence the relationship to architecture and the relationship of architecture to the problems it is supposed to help solve.

Poverty manifests itself in architecture in different ways. It can be a lack of quality housing, limited access to public spaces and services, segregation and social exclusion. Architecture can both reinforce and alleviate poverty - it can be a tool for social control and segregation, but also a means to create inclusive and equitable environments.

The Poverty Vector exhibition focuses primarily on the alleviation of the effects of poverty. It presents projects and concepts that seek to create affordable and decent housing, revitalise neglected areas and promote social inclusion. It also shares a common theme with the exhibition Poverty (curated by Barbora Ilič, Michal Konečný and Stanislav Biler), held from 17 January to 30 March 2025 at the Fine Arts Gallery in Havlíčkův Brod and the Horácké Gallery in Nové Město na Moravě, which deals with poverty in a broader social and historical context, with an emphasis on reflection in art from the Baroque to the present. The two exhibitions refer to each other because together they create a complex picture of the issue, from physical manifestations in architecture and urbanism to cultural and social aspects.
