Six postcards
9. 6. 2020 – 26. 7. 2020
House of the Lords of Kunštát
The exhibition titled Six Postcards at the House of the Lords of Kunštát presents a project of the same name by photographer Jolana Havelková. The exhibited photographs, collages, drawings, paintings, music scores, assemblages, objects, texts and videos by more than 150 artists have one subject in common – a postcard with a black and white photograph by Jolana Havelková. That is, the diverse artistic and other expressions are reactions to her work.
At the Six Postcards exhibition, Havelková’s work is represented with a single postcard, and at the same time with many of them; having lost their original meaning for her, they became, for other artists, an incentive, inspiration, guideline, and subject matter for the creation of new artifacts. What was a spontaneous event at the beginning, when Havelková gave out imperfectly printed postcards to passers-by in Kolín square, became over the years a singular artistic achievement of unexpected extent. The exhibition maps all the reactions and responses of random acquaintances, artists, friends, and neighbours to receiving six of the same black and white postcards since the beginning of the project, i.e. over the past 25 years. The fates and transformations of the postcards, primarily intended for being sent by mail and for the transmission of textual and pictorial information, indicate other possibilities and ways of communication through art and beyond.
Jolana Havelková (*1966) is a photographer, teacher and curator. She graduated from the Institute of Creative Photography, Faculty of Philosophy and Science of the Silesian University in Opava. Besides photography, she uses a number of other means of expression as well, including video and music. Her work includes conceptual, experimental, mail art and site-specific projects. She is also involved in social-art events and participatory art practice.
