The exhibition The Gardens of the Monk Rabinovich at House of Arts Brno presents part of the oeuvre of Viktor Pivovarov, one of the founders of Moscow conceptualism, who permanently settled in Prague in 1982.
The selection of paintings was influenced by the gallery space and encompasses both earlier works and brand-new cycles displayed in Brno for the first time. It will also be the first occasion to show the artist's sculptures created directly for the exterior of the House of Arts. They are the first ever large-scale sculptures in Pivovarov's work.
The exhibition will also include the so-called albums. This specific art form of conceptual art, invented by Ilya Kabakov and Viktor Pivovarov, combines text and painting in a compelling way.
The whole exhibition is conceived as a journey through the various exhibition rooms, which can be perceived as special gardens. We can walk in the musical, yellow, June, eidetic, nocturnal or lost garden. Not to mention The Gardens of the Monk Rabinovich representing a distinctive plant kingdom. Each room-garden shows completely different painting cycles and albums whose common link is a very fragile, original poetics.
Viktor Pivovarov is being presented in Brno in this wide range for the fifth time. The exhibition Painting and Text was held at the House of the Lords of Kunštát in 1989, with Jiří Valoch as curator, and in 2010 the exhibition They, curated by Marek Pokorný, was staged at the Moravian Gallery in Brno.
