Traces of Marius Kotrba in Brno

Marius Kotrba became widely known as an author of sculptures in public space with a very distinctive handwriting. However, his work is much broader, including sculptures, drawings or reliefs, which together form intertwining themes. Such an intermedia character is unique in Czech contemporary art.

Kotrba first presented a solo exhibition at the House of Arts Brno in 1997, which offered a sculptural part of his work. In 2004, on the occasion of the opening of the newly reconstructed Institute of Geological Sciences of the Faculty of Science, the sculpture Ringing (also known under the unofficial title Pair) was unveiled. Subsequently, he took part in the first edition of the Brno Art Open 2008 biennial of art in public space (named Sculptures in the Streets back then), where he presented his sculpture Saint Christopher. In 2011, the sculpture most familiar to Brno residents today from Kotrba's work, Justice on Moravské náměstí, was permanently installed in Brno's urban space. At the same time, the author expressed his wish to present his paintings, for which the House of the Lords of Kunštát was considered, but unfortunately the project did not materialize after Kotrba's sudden death.

The exhibition, which will now take place at the House of Arts, will comprehensively focus on all areas of Kotrbas' work, whose central theme has always been above all human, interpersonal relationships and spiritual values influencing our existence. The exhibition will be open on Tuesday 24 September 2024 and will run until spring 2025.
